On July 16, the opening ceremonies took place for the 5th installation in the cycle of the Women's Grand Prix in the majestic city of Jermuk in southern Armenia. Words of welcome were led by none other than the President of Armenia, who doubles as the (Chess Federation President), Serge Sargsyan who was joined on stage by FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. Notable chess luminaries in the audience included Global Chess president Geoffrey Borg as well as 5-time world champion Nona Gaprindashvili. We should note that Ms. Gaprindashvili looks forward to enjoying the coming two weeks in Jermuk as she will be in attendance at the event for its duration. Her presence is sure to enhance the chess atmosphere of Jermuk, a town gradually becoming as well known for chess as it is for its fame as a resort destination.
The drawing of lots was administered by the chief arbiter of the event, international arbiter Armen Nikoghosyan. The first round kicks off on July 17 at 15:00 local time. Best of luck to all participants as we all await many rounds of exciting chess from the strongest women players in the world.
